Introduction

Hi all! In this blog, I’ll be reviewing Marionetta as parts of the creators’ challenge. The prompt was to pick one with a gothic or dark fantasy setting. I know Marionetta is a bit of a stretch but it’s the closet thing to that that I read, so in this review I’ll be focusing particularly on the dark fantasy and gothic elements.

Plot Summary

Marionetta follows Julia, who is happy with her life and the expectations of her country, unlike her more outgoing friend Kamille. When Kamille convinces Julia to visit a circus, they both end up stuck there. For Kamille, she is able to be free and meet others who are different but, for Julia, she is forced into an unfamiliar world that she wants no part in. But as she learns more about the people and the truth of her country, she might have no choice but to change.

My Thoughts

This is probably my favourite webtoon (as you might be able to tell from my profile). I absolutely adore it- the characters, the story, the art style. Julia is one of my favourite protagonist, I really relate to her in a way I can’t say for many other characters and I believe her arc.

I think it does a good job of introducing dark fantasy and gothic elements amongst the cute art style and fun characters. I think the setting of an old-fashioned circus does aid this as it can seem quite unsettling and unfamiliar but also cosy and fun. I love all the different costumes they wear.

I feel like there is always this underlying unease as, although the characters are getting closer to each other and having fun, there are so many unanswered questions so there feels like there’s a constant threat below the surface and a problem they can’t solve.

I think that’s why I love it. You’re swept in by these fantastical and beautiful settings and characters, and intrigued by the disturbing elements, but at the same time you can freak out over ship moments and laugh with the characters.

If you haven’t read this webtoon, I would highly recommend it, you’re missing out! If you like fantasy, vintage circus aesthetics, political world building, comedy and romance, please read it! I will never stop talking about how good it is. Thank you.
