As soon as I saw this post I knew what I was going to do. This is a story that surrounds creatures of Japanese Mythology. And is about the story of two
Oni, it’s very wholesome, but very sad.
Something to note, it can vary a bit sometimes. Red Oni and blue Oni may or may not know each other, and some other details may vary as well. The story was originally written by Hamada Hirosuke, and was first published in 1933.

Red Oni Blue Oni
Once upon a time, there lived Aka Oni or ‘red Oni’. He lived far up in the mountains, that looked over a village, and he was extremely lonely, as it was only him that Inhabited that mountain, so he had no friends.
Each day, he saw how the human children would play and laugh together, and having so much fun, and were never lonely he wished to become friends with the human children. But, because Aka Oni was an Oni, all the villagers ran away and screamed in fear each time they saw him, because he was an Oni.
This made Aka Oni extremely sad, that no one wanted to be his friend, and was even more sad and lonely then before. So, on his mountain, outside of his cave, he put up a sign, that read:
╔══════╗
Home of a Gentle Ogre,
All Are Welcome,
Tea and Tasty Cakes Available.

He sat inside his cave, waiting and waiting excitedly for people to come by to be his friend. But, no one ever came, leaving him alone once again. It was because Oni are such feared and viscous creatures that eat humans, that they were afraid of him, but just maybe, they aren’t all the same. The red Oni was sad, angry, and puzzled that no one would come to visit him. He said:
“I’m such a kind Ogre; why would nobody visit me?.”
He became very sad that no one stopped by, and tore down the sign and said:
”This is useless.”
And he even began to shed some tears out of sadness and loneliness. Then, the Blue Oni spotted him, and was touched and moved by his the Red Oni’s feelings. So, the blue Oni then thought of a plan.
The blue Oni’s plan was to go into town and terrorize the villagers and children, acting as a vicious Oni wanting to eat people. Then, the Red Oni would swoop in and save the day and chase the Blue Oni off, ‘rescuing’ the villagers.
So that’s what they did, Blue Oni came in, acting terrifying, while Red Oni came in, and took blue Oni to the ground, pretending to fight. Red Oni hit Blue Oni, as it was part of the plan. But because he was such a gentle and kind Oni, he didn’t want to hurt him, so only hit blue Oni lightly. So, pretending to drag Red Oni in, blue Oni actually whispered into his ear:
”Hit me. It must look convincing.”
He then hit Blue Oni rather hard, and sent Blue Oni running away, ‘saving’ the villagers. Red Oni did feel bad, but those feelings quickly dispersed as all the villagers thanked him so much, and the children started to play with him.
Red Oni was happy as he finally had friends to play with, and was no longer lonely. A few days went by, and he hadn’t seen Blue Oni, so he decided to pay him a visit on his mountain. So Red Oni hopped on a cloud and rode there.
Red Oni landed on a very freezing cold and dark mountain, one that was very isolated and far away from anyone else. It reminded him of his mountain and how it was before, sad and lonely, with no one else to keep each other company. It was extremely cold and snowy, with wind whipping everywhere, and Red Oni thought about how bad it must be to live up here, he felt sad for Blue Oni. He then climbed up to the top of the mountain, and found Blue Oni’s cave. But on the rock to the entrance of the cave, there hung a sign:
╔══════╗
Blue Oni not at home
╚══════
Red Oni wondered where Blue Oni could have gone, and then tucked away in the corner of a rock, flapping in the wind was a folded piece of paper. He picked it up, and read it, it said:
”My Dear Red Ogre, if people find out that you are a friend of the Bad Blue Ogre’s, they will not let the children come to you any more. So, I’m leaving. Please live happily with the children.
Goodbye,
Blue Ogre.”
Red Oni immediately burst out crying, weeping and weeping, for all along without knowing, he truly had a friend, but didn’t even know it, and had been lonely just like him, Red Oni cried and cried on the mountain all alone, he cried out:
“Blue Ogre is gone! A dear friend of mine! He is gone!”
Red Oni and Blue Oni never saw each other again.

I find this story really wholesome yet very sad at the same time. It was wholesome how Blue Oni did that for Red Oni, and how he was so kind and loving towards him. But it ultimately ended in sadness. There is a moral in this story as well. I hope you enjoyed this post! #PWSpotlight
