tw || food, alcohol

okay so,, this blog is going to be a little bit different. the other day i randomly stumbled upon mirin in my pantry which immediately gave me flashbacks to kid milli slurping it as if it was orange juice and i was like hey-- idea!

he did a video where he cooked sukiyaki and i thought it might be fun to try and recreate it. the thing is that i usually have this ionate hate towards cooking and since i was left home alone for easter i literally ate the simplest things just enough to survive. so there was this small spark of hope that maybe trying to follow his instructions to try and cook something might make the process more bearable. and spoiler alert – it was actually pretty fun. although i did improvise a shit ton since i didn’t exactly have a bunch of ingredients he used or i just refused to put them in (i’m looking at you soju).

anyways,,, the plan for this blog is to kinda go through each step of making the meal. and after each step i’ll also drop a milli song recommendation since, last time i checked, this wasn’t culinary amino so that’s gonna be my attempt to keep it a bit more on topic.

and now let’s start cooking!

first things first lads, we put 100mL of soya sauce, 50mL of mirin and 60mL of brown sugar into a pot. chef choi’s quantity was a bit different. he put double the amount of mirin but i didn’t want to use too much since the bottle wasn’t too big to begin with and my dad probably would’ve gotten pissy if i used up too much. he also put more sugar cause he said he likes sweet things but in my case, i think i’m gonna put even less sugar next time cause i prefer it to be saltier than sweeter.

then we cooked it nicely in our little pots. he also put soju but after tasting it for the first time recently i have come to the conclusion that it sucks and literally has no taste aside from alcohol. plus to get it in croatia it’s like hella expensive as well so i was like we shall survive just fine without the devil’s water.

˗ˏˋ boss thang ft. young b ˎˊ˗

‘boss thang’ is just that bitch. it’s powerful. it’s strong. tastes like some well-seasoned meat. one that makes your mouth water the moment its smell hits your nostrils. and then tastes like the softest cloud – simply melting and leaving behind a powerful mix of flavors. it’s got quite an interesting beat. it almost feels like if you separate it into two parts, it could be two different songs. a faded beat in the back that if it was left alone would make you feel as if you were stuck in some kind of dystopian futuristic movie, giving the one on top of it more depth. and then milli’s rap accompanied with a bunch of other little details and adlibs gives it so much more power. it makes me go crazy every single time. makes my heart turn into fire. but the thing that makes me love this song as much as i do tho is definitely its catchiness. the hook is so simple and easy to catch that you can already sing along during the first listen. it sticks to your mind like glue and stays there for a long time even after the song is done. all in all, in this household we love queen ‘boss thang’.

next up, we add a glass of water into the pot and let it boil. he also put in katsuo broth but i do not have that so i had to improvise. and the best idea that my brain farted out was to put in the oil bags that come with the instant ramen noodles which i will use up later as well.

his instruction while waiting for all of that was to grab yourself an alcoholic beverage and since i wanted to do it properly i poured myself a mug of red wine. don’t worry, it wasn’t full. i didn’t play with knives and fire while drunk. please do skip this step if you are below the drinking age.

the next song we got is a little bit more bitter. like a bar of chocolate that’s a bit darker. or a shot of alcohol during a lonely night. the guitar perhaps feels lonely as well. as it’s the only thing that follows his voice throughout most of the song. it has this dark, dirty vibe. with a sound that feels heavy on your shoulders. giving even a somewhat broken feeling as the guitar creates these notes that cut away from each other for a few moments and his voice is filled with a bit more grittiness. the song is very simple but i think it’s the simplicity what gives it so much impact. it feels like a song that can keep you company during a lonely bitter night. one that even though it feels like it needs a hug, could still give one it return. give a little warm spark of comfort that has the power to drive away the dark cold night.

okay now we get to the actual food. chef milli said that sukiyaki can be customized and that pretty much anything can be put into it. he decided to put in meat, green onion, tofu and noodles, maybe something else as well. he did separate it and cooked the onions and spicy peppers in the soup we started with. and then the rest on a pan. but i decided to just put everything into a pan. so i started with almost a whole green pepper and half an onion that i sliced into strips, added some spices and friend it on some oil.

the ‘ai, the playlist’ album has so many songs with beats that go so hard one after another but something about this one just slapped my soul right into musical heaven. but despite the amount of times i listened to it, it’s still so hard to explain the feeling of this song. it tastes like something you would take a bite of and be confused whether you like it or not. it’s giving me vibes of some kind of food with a lot of crunchiness to it. there’s so many flavors to it. so many charms and interesting elements. it lasts for only two and a half minutes but is filled with so much different ingredients that mix together into this one amazing combo. it doesn’t give you a chance to let your guard down even for a bit. the only thing that feels more consistent is the beat that sounds like water dripping in a cave but aside from that it constantly hits you with some new sounds added to it. some echo. some screaming. some fun distortions on their voices. there’s just so much going on and it’s always a fun time hearing it.

after a little while of waiting – don’t ask how long cause i have literally no clue for how long i left any of the food on fire – i added chicken. chef kid put in beef and i would’ve loved to have some nice beef but living like a broke college student, chicken it was. and then i let all of it cook until i decided it was enough. at one point my sister also came over and she kinda took over the decision to estimate when it’s done or not.

also chef wonjae had some already cooked noodles that he just put in but i cooked a pack of instant noodles.

˗ˏˋ life ft. the quiett ˎˊ˗

i guess the way i would explain this song is that it tastes bitter sweet – kind of like life itself. tastes like something that would at first send a weird sensation to your taste buds but once you’re adjusted to it, it feels almost warm and soft. the piano that appears in the beginning and end, and in a way follows us through the song as well, hits me with some weird nostalgia. shoots me right back to the past when things felt a little bit more simple and less suffocating. i don’t know… there’s a lot to this song. the vibe it has going on creates an atmosphere that feels both dark and bright. heavy yet also light. as if the song is having a battle within itself. but a song that will never fail to bring a little bit of relief to a difficult moment in life.

and it’s finally time to serve our dish. i put the noodles, veggies and chicken on top and then poured the soup over it. added some green onion and sesame on top of it and done. the way i served it was a bit different but at that point half of the recipe was different so i didn’t really care anymore.

and here’s the final product

in the end i was actually quite proud of it. and it was pretty damn tasty so i’m definitely gonna be doing it again. if you by any chance decide to try and make the dish yourself, be sure to follow him rather than me and my inability to explain stuff. although the way he explains it is at the same time kinda vague and detailed, i think that if you have any kind of basic cooking skills, you could probably tie the loose ends together.

and that is it for this blog. hope you enjoyed this sort of different idea i wanted to try out.

if you sticked through this whole thing, thank you for reading and

bye
