making a blog of my 2022 faves has always been one of the highlights of the end of the year period for me but considering blogging started feeling a lot like a chore this year it came a bit late.

i usually have a whole long intro but since this one is kinda a bit more for me to have an overview of my faves in the future, i'm being a bit lazy with everything. basically i have a bunch of different rankings of different categories and then in the end a final ranking of my absolute faves and a ranking of my top artists that's based on a point system i have worked out. i don't include more than one release per artist per ranking so that some of them don't overcrowd it. this doesn't apply to the final top songs tho.

this year i'm also only writing a bit about the number one choice because like i said - blogging doesn't really tickle the right spot in my brain lately. not such a great intro, sorry, but yeah, let's get into it.

i’m pretty sure since debut until now, every comeback these guys have had, i loved every title track a bit more than the last one. so if we do the math and follow that gradual growth of my enjoyment with their releases, obviously this one would end up on top. and not just from them but overall this whole year. sometimes it’s quite easy to win me over and this song might have sneaked a peek into my brain to know exactly what the perfect combination was. but like,, it’s got a bass i could feel in my bones and a party vibe that would mentally throw me into a club and i was sold. that’s it. my card on the table. just take it. i’ve seen a lot of negative opinions about this release tho and i don’t really understand why there’s even a whole crowd booing it and considering it one of the worst releases of the year. like it’s just fun. does it really need a bigger purpose than that? it’s fun, explosive, dynamic and does its job well to entertain me for three minutes.

choosing my favorite side track of the year was quite a challenge. i definitely knew it would be an xdinary heroes song, i just couldn’t decide which damn one. all of them were simply that good. gotta thank the kpop gods for these six funky dudes cause whatever they got going on ever since debut, i am absolutely in love with it. it’s strong, loud and gritty but also quirky and fun and a bit all over the place. the chaos thrown both into their music and style is simply so addicting that they definitely dominated the second part of 2022 for me. this song however isn’t really all that quirky but rather a strong hitting pop rock song and it does what it wanted to do perfectly. it serves great instrumental, great vocals, an explosive chorus and just an overall gripping vibe. there’s so much energy thrown into it that it easily transfers to the listener as well. it’s the type of song that follows you into a battle. makes you confident. makes you look for the fun and euphoric parts of life.

and we have xdinary heroes as number one again but after saying how much i loved all their side tracks, is it really all that surprising? with this one too it was a bit of a debate whether i enjoyed this album more or their ‘overload’ album. but considering i’ve replayed ‘hello world’ a lot more times and am familiar perfectly with every song at this point, it kinda won over the newer one. i said this in a shitpost before but i’ll say it again – xdinary heroes did something none other kpop group or band ever did before and that’s releasing two albums within a year and me enjoying every single song to the fullest. there’s always that one ballad or weaker song that i just don’t care about but they did not miss once. this album is just banger after banger. and perhaps that might be because all of the songs kinda keep a similar vibe. they all kinda feel like walking into a crazy new world like alice in wonderland type of thing. but all of them still with such specific textures and new strengths and elements to fall for, as if they all represent different little lands within that crazy world.

i really genuinely thought that gidle would easily, without a singular sweat, take first place in the music video category since i was absolutely in love with both of their mvs this year. but then ateez was just like “wait a second” and dropped a dystopian angst masterpiece barely before the year ended. ‘halazia’ felt more than just an mv. it felt like a movie. an experience. a moment i lost my goddamn mind. the mv compliments the song in such an insanely well-crafted way that i’m not sure i would’ve enjoyed the song as much without the visuals to go with it. there were so many great moments. like wooyoung glancing at us while the world collapses behind him, ominous church bells ringing in the distance, giving everything so much more weight. or yeosang staring confidently the scarecrow thing in the eyes as his deep voice shines in the song, accompanied with the drums that create such an epic atmosphere. or the way gold was used in the second chorus. or the final bell as the ball hits san. or or or…. there’s so much. i feel like i could dissect this video into a million different pieces and all of them would hold their own power and meaning. it was just that good of an mv for me.

to be completely honest, at debut i was kinda very indifferent towards these girls. i didn’t really vibe with the concept so it was very surprising that already with their first comeback they proved me wrong and had me by my throat. this release had everything. song, choreography, music video, styling. everything! the choreography obviously even being my personal winner for the year. the whole thing is just so addicting. catches your full attention immediately at the beginning and doesn’t let go for even a second until it’s done. it’s dynamic, fun and sprinkled with so many interesting moves. the choreo by itself is already really intriguing with how fast paced and hard hitting it is but the girls then really make it shine completely. their attitudes are perfect for it, the confidence and sassiness, the way they look like this insane choreo is so easy for them to perform. they make it seem so effortless yet so fun and really create such a striking performance each time.

petition for seventeen leader line to release at least one song every year. the combo of these three men is something else completely and i can’t believe svt be gatekeeping them from us smh. ‘change up’ was a banger and then they made us wait five years for a new one. but perhaps the wait was worth it because this one?? this one is straight out of the clubs. like damn makes me want to turn my room into a dance floor and dance along while i play it on loop. should probably make an elaborate plan on how to bribe a dj to play it at least once the next time i go out. but all in all, there’s not really much i have to say about it. it’s just really fun and i love fun. fun party songs will never be a miss for me. it’s filled with energy and a different sort of charisma from each one of them. a nice bop to play every time an atmosphere needs to be picked up.

and here we have my spotify artist of the year. the thing i love about be’o is that his music is so easy to listen to. it feels like a chill warm afternoon or a freshly baked cake. it’s like it’s built out of a bunch of little pieces that just make things in life easier and brighter and i love it. it’s like a little ray of joy even if the song doesn’t necessarily have a happy topic and vibe. it might also be because his music feels weirdly nostalgic to me. as if it throws me back into an easier period of time and i can’t quite explain why it’s like that. but this song is no exception to the weird feeling. it feels sparkly and light and as if it’s colored with pastel crayons. makes me feel that same way every time i hear it too. like i’m a light feather or a child playing with colors. it’s got such a strange mood. as if it’s happy but that happiness is fading somewhere in the distance while you still hold the strings attached to it, not letting it disappear completely. it’s just a lovely song and one i have been obsessed with ever since it came out. but what can i say – i love the weird longingly warm feeling it leaves.
